Let people get high if they want to.
Right now, in the USA, a lot of people who have an urgent need for pain relief aren’t getting it. Chronic pain patients, people who have just had major surgery or injury, people dying of cancer. It’s not because pain medicine is hard to make, or expensive, but because there are legal barriers.
Every solution, they tell us, must balance the needs of pain patients against the risk of worsening the terrible opioid epidemic. But as control of pain medication gets stricter, the death toll continues to rise. How can this be?
The majority of the fatal overdoses involve street heroin. Unreliable potency, contaminated with street fentanyl or worse, often injected unhygenically, street heroin kills. Meanwhile, addicts who have a reliable and safe drug supply can often maintain some sort of stable and productive life with far less harm to their physical health. By remaining part of society, they may be able to access the real mental health care and social supports that they need to recover from addiction.
Cutting the opioid supply kills addicts and tortures patients in pain. It’s a lose-lose, time to loosen the strings.
